Rose Rosette Disease: How to Identify, Treat & Prevent It

With a whopping 100% fatality rate, rose rosette is the most serious disease a gardener can encounter. Unlike black spot or powdery mildew, there’s no cure, treatment, or chance for recovery. While you can’t save a rose already infected with rose rosette, early identification and fast removal will help protect other roses in your garden. We’ll cover what rose rosette is, how to identify it, what to do if a plant is infected, and how to reduce the risk of future infections.

What Is Rose Rosette Disease?

Rose rosette disease is caused by rose rosette virus, transmitted by a microscopic eriophyid mite. Unlike other common rose diseases, this one is viral (not fungal) meaning fungicides offer no protection whatsoever. 

This virus is systemic. Once inside the plant, it spreads through the entire vascular system (including the roots), making it impossible to prune out as you would with a fungal infection.

First documented in the 1940s, rose rosette is now confirmed across the majority of the USA. The prognosis isn’t pretty: infected plants typically decline and die within 2 to 5 years. 

How Rose Rosette Spreads

Rose rosette is spread through microscopic mites that feed on infected roses, mainly the multiflora rose. This invasive wild rose is commonly found along roadsides, fence lines, and untended land. Gardens near multiflora populations carry meaningfully higher risk. 

Other common ways rose rosette spreads include:

  • Wind currents: These mites don’t fly, but can travel up to 2 miles on wind currents, landing on healthy plants. 

  • Gardening tools, gloves, & clothing: Mites will hitch a ride on anything that touches them. When working in the garden, always wash/sanitize tools between plants. 

  • Animals: Mites can travel long distances by riding on the backs of birds and deer.

  • Plant to plant: Mites can be easily transferred from one plant to another where foliage touches. Allowing adequate space between plants can help prevent the spread of disease. 

  • Grafting: In grafted roses, one  variety is attached to the rootstock of another. If one of those parts is infected with the virus, it’ll spread throughout the entire plant. This is why it’s important to check where your nursery sources its stock! 

Seasonal note: Mites pose an active risk from April through December, with populations multiplying rapidly from midsummer through early fall. In winter, they hide in bud scales and protected crevices on the plant, ready to reemerge the following spring.

How to Identify Rose Rosette Disease

Early and accurate identification is crucial to eliminating rose rosette disease from your garden. Symptoms typically show up 30 to 146 days after exposure and are most visible from spring through midseason during active growth, appearing either on one shoot or across the entire plant. We’ll cover the symptoms to look for and how to confirm the diagnosis so you can take the right actions to save your garden.

Symptoms to Look For

There are a number of ways rose rosette can manifest. The most common symptoms include:

  • Witches’ broom: The telltale sign; look for dense clusters of abnormal shoots emerging from a single point (almost resembling a bird’s nest). 

  • Excessive thorniness: Look for new canes covered in substantially more thorns than usual. Rose rosette thorns are typically soft and pliable, unlike the sharp and rigid texture of normal ones. 

  • Abnormal stem thickness: Stems affected by rose rosette will appear swollen relative to healthy growth.

  • Discoloration: New growth will turn an intense red or purple and fail to turn green as it matures. 

  • Distorted leaves: Leaves may appear curled, strapped, twisted, or undersized, sometimes forming a yellow mosaic pattern. 

  • Deformed flower buds: Buds appear misshapen or fail to open. 

  • Branch dieback: Stems turn brown or black as tissue dies. 

*Don’t assume your rose has rose rosette disease if it shows just one of these symptoms. If it exhibits several of the above mentioned together, that’s a much stronger indicator of the virus.

What Rose Rosette Is Often Confused With

Rose rosette disease shares several symptoms with other issues (or non-issues). Misdiagnosis leads to unnecessary plant removal, as well as a whole lot of stress. The most common rose rosette look-alikes include:

  • Healthy reddish growth: Many rose varieties naturally push reddish new leaves. This is usually healthy, as long as they turn green and develop into normal foliage as the rose matures. Rosette growth will stay distorted. 

  • Herbicide drift/pesticide injury: Weed-killing chemicals (particularly glyphosate) can move through the air and cause strapped, distorted, discolored growth that closely mimics rosette. Herbicide or pesticide damage typically appears on the side of the plant facing the application and doesn’t produce witches’ broom or increased thorniness.

  • Rose mosaic: Another virus that can produce a yellow mosaic or mottle pattern on leaves. Rose mosaic is simply cosmetic (not fatal) and doesn’t cause witches’ broom or excessive thorniness.

Confirming a Diagnosis

It’s best not to dig up your rose on suspicion alone. Consider photographing the symptoms and submitting them to a local cooperative extension office or rose rosette research program for confirmation. You could also cut off a small symptomatic shoot for lab testing, just make sure to seal it in a plastic bag to avoid spreading mites during transport.

How to Treat Rose Rosette Disease

The sad truth is that there’s no cure or treatment for rose rosette disease. There’s no fungicide, miticide, pruning strategy, or cultural practice that will save an infected plant. Once rose rosette is confirmed, the main goal should be containment. We’ll cover removing the infected plant to protect the rest of your garden, as well as tips for safely replanting a new one after removal.

Removing an Infected Plant

Removal of a plant infected with rose rosette disease can be done in 4 simple steps:

  1. Confirm diagnosis: To save yourself the headache, confirm what you’re seeing on your plant is definitely rose rosette disease before digging it up.

  2. Dig out the plant: Use a digging fork to loosen and lift the entire plant, including as much of the root system as possible, to remove any trace of the virus. 

  3. Bag & dispose of the plant: Wrap any dug out material in a heavy plastic trash bag on site (don’t carry it uncovered through the garden) and immediately dispose of it. Do NOT compost, chip, or shred any of this material.  

  4. Sanitize tools: Gardening tools are a primary transport mode for mites. Disinfect or wash anything that may have touched the infected plant, including gloves and clothing, before handling other roses. 

*No need to panic and start digging out other plants in the garden. If only one plant shows symptoms, remove only that plant and monitor the rest closely.

Can You Prune Out Rose Rosette?

No, rose rosette disease can not be pruned out. The virus is systemic, moving through the entire plant, including the roots. Cutting out symptomatic canes simply won’t solve the problem. Even worse, it could temporarily mask symptoms, delaying removal and giving mites an opportunity to infect neighboring roses. 

Replanting After Removal

The longer you wait to replant a new rose in the same spot as the infected one, the safer. Eriophyid mites survive only a few days without a host, so it’s recommended to wait a minimum of one week. 

Luckily, rose rosette doesn’t persist in soil, so soil treatment isn’t necessary. However, it’s important to remove and dispose of any remaining root fragments that could still be carrying the virus. 

Most gardeners will be eager to replace the infected rose with a new one. Alternatively, consider planting a non-host species in that position to create a buffer that slows mite movement between remaining roses. This could be any plant outside of the Rosa genus such as azaleas, hydrangeas, and boxwoods.

Do Miticides Work?

Miticides are generally not recommended for rose rosette control. In fact, there’s probably more harm than good that can be done from them. Eriophyid mites are not reliably controlled by most available products, and research on effective options is ongoing and inconclusive. Plus, broad-spectrum chemical applications kill the predatory mites and beneficial insects that provide some natural suppression. 

One lower-impact option some growers use to target overwintering mites is a dormant oil application after late-winter pruning. Just to be clear: this is a risk reduction measure, NOT a treatment.

How to Prevent Rose Rosette Disease

The only real defense against rose rosette disease is a solid prevention strategy. With a few protective measures and the right combination of care habits, you can reduce mite exposure and keep your roses strong. 

Remove Nearby Multiflora Rose

For gardens near wild rose populations, removing multiflora roses is the single most effective action you can take to mitigate mite exposure. Remove them from property lines and adjacent untended areas where possible. 

You can identify multiflora roses by their:

  • Archines canes about 3-10 feet long

  • Clusters of small, fragrant white to pale-pink flowers with five petals 

  • Prolific small red hips

Space Roses for Airflow

Spacing plants adequately is the best way to eliminate the easiest transmission route for mites: plant-to-plant. Allow enough room so that mature foliage doesn’t touch between plants. This simple measure reduces the risk of not only rose rosette disease, but other common fungal infections like black spot and powdery mildew

Prune and Clean Up in Late Winter

Pruning your roses in late winter or early spring is an excellent mite reduction practice. Mites love to spend the winter in bud scales, old spent blooms, and dried seed heads. Cutting out this material before spring growth will eliminate their hiding spots and reduce overwintering populations. 

*Always dispose of prunings – do NOT compost.

Avoid Moving Mites Around the Garden

Mites are opportunistic, catching free rides around the garden wherever they can get them. Restrict their movement with these simple habits:

  • Sanitize pruners between plants

  • Wash gloves and clothing after handling wild roses

  • Avoid using leaf blowers near rose beds, as mites commonly travel via air streams

Use Windbreaks Where Possible

Wind is the primary long-distance travel route for mites. Reduce wind exposure with:

  • Privacy fencing/high-density netting: Microscopic mites can slip right through standard open-mesh fences. Solid wood, vinyl, or dense netting will help block or significantly diffuse wind. 

  • Tall plants or hedges: Ornamental grasses, tall salvias, or upright shrubs like hydrangeas are non-host plants that can act as a shield between roses and mites. 

*Position fencing and barrier plants on the prevailing wind side of rose beds.

Keep Plants Healthy and Inspect Regularly

Overall plant health and vigor is a major risk factor for rose rosette disease. The more stressed a rose is, the more vulnerable it becomes to mite establishment. These basic care habits will keep your roses healthy, happy, and make them less of a target for these vicious invaders:

  • Full sun exposure: Ensure your roses are planted in a location that gets 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.

  • Deep, consistent watering: Roses need enough water to stay hydrated, but hate standing in soggy soil. Space out waterings to avoid excess moisture that could lead to root rot. 

  • Appropriate feeding: Once your rose is established, apply a balanced rose fertilizer every 3 to 4 weeks during the growing season. Stop feeding 6-8 weeks before your first local frost date to help it harden off before winter. 

  • Annual pruning: Cut out any dead, diseased, or damaged wood in late winter or early spring to eliminate overwintering spots for mites. This will also rejuvenate the plant and promote healthy, new growth.

*Early detection is key to stopping the spread of mites. Make a habit of walking your rose beds regularly during the growing season, keeping a close eye on new growth where rose rosette symptoms will first appear.

Are Any Roses Resistant to Rose Rosette?

No, no commercially available rose is fully immune to rose rosette, and any variety can be infected. Breeding programs at multiple universities have been working on genetic resistance since the mid-2010s. And while progress is ongoing, it hasn’t yet reached the broader market. 

What we do know is that some native and species roses show meaningful tolerance compared to modern hybrids. Selecting an older variety can reduce the risk of infection, but not eliminate it. In the end, the best way to keep your roses disease-free is to develop a consistent care routine. 

*While there are many disease-resistant roses available, resistance only applies to fungal diseases. Rose rosette is a virus, and therefore modern genetics don’t offer added protection.
