History

One of the world’s foremost rose breeders, W. Kordes' Söhne was founded in 1887 by Wilhelm Kordes I. Based in Germany, Kordes first focused on importing and propagating roses but, over time, expanded to become a preeminent leader in garden, cut, and potted roses.

A Family Rooted in Roses

What began as an effort to create rose varieties to withstand Germany’s temperamental climate quickly evolved into developing disease-resistant, low-maintenance rose varieties. While Kordes is known for many iconic stems, some of the most notable include their award-winning Parfuma scented roses—an elite collection of hybrid tea and shrub roses praised for their exceptional aroma.

As the company evolved, it invested in state-of-the-art facilities to significantly scale production. By the mid-20th century, Kordes produced millions of plants annually and began introducing its groundbreaking rose varieties. Today, Kordes roses are not only coveted for their aesthetic appeal but also for their eco-friendly breeding practices.
